About Jeff Selby and New Style Hustle


Originally a house, hip hop and breakdancer, Brooklyn native Jeff Selby is no stranger to the underground dance scene that thrives in New York City.  His life-long passion for dance, boundless creativity and ability to think outside the box has helped him emerge as the creator and teacher of a new form of partner dancing now known as New Style Hustle.

To Jeff, dance has always been a source of joy and self expression and his passion for music and dance can be seen and felt just by observing him moving to music.  Jeff was eager to expand his dance horizons when he became enthralled with the smooth partner dance, the Hustle, which originated in NY in the 1970's.  He soon found himself attending local Hustle dance events where he would carefully study the movements.  With the absence of a partner, he would head home and practice the movement patterns with a long sleeved shirt on a clothes hanger!  

Eventually Jeff found real partners to dance with and caught on to the basics but instead of following the usual form of the dance, he had a vision that would soon assist in making the dance his own.  Inspired by house music, Jeff began to spice it up by keeping the classic footwork and patterns but altering the tempo and thoughtfully incorporating several other styles of dance such as breakdancing, house, tango and many more. His distinct style has created an updated, catchy form of the dance.  By bringing Hustle up to date, Jeff's style has appealed to the new generation of dancers, with respect to the old disco style and tempo that has inspired him. 

By popular demand, Jeff has been teaching his unique twist on the partner dance to beginners through professionals for the past 5 years in private lessons, classes and workshops throughout the city and also on the West Coast.  He has also been performing the dance at various events all over New York.  More recently, he and his partner of 3 years, Nicole Mercado were the winners of the legendary Rock Steady Crew's 34th Anniversary Hustle Contest.

Jeff is as passionate about dancing New Style Hustle as he is about teaching it.  Teaching is an art form in and of itself and passing his knowledge along to others is a gift that he is enthusiastic about sharing.  Jeff has a way of teaching that encourages freedom of movement while learning to follow coordinated patterns.  With an old partner dance that is thought to be lost and forgotten by most, Jeff is excited to bring back a newly renovated version - Hustle with a new twist!  We are proud to introduce you to New Style Hustle!
